My expert opinion

I really said this on a recent Vegas Gang podcast, and taken out of context the quote looks almost, but not quite, pithy. But if you look at the entire transcribed section of the quote on the Poker Grump’s blog, you can see just how un-pithy I can sound:

I mean, yknow, Ive seen people vomit on other people and not get trespassed, so to trespass somebody for taking a picture, thats kind of ridiculous.

I know that written speech is quite different than the spoken word but wow, that reads badly. And just to think that when I was working as a security officer one of my evaluations said that I was articulate. I guess I’ve deteriorated since then. Either that or it’s easier to be articulate when you’re giving directions to the bathroom than when you’re trying to condense your thoughts on a complicated legal imbroglio.

If you’re wondering about the differences between written and spoken English, that’s one right there, because I would probably never use the word “imbroglio,” since though I know how it’s spelled and what it means I’m not 100% about how it’s pronounced, though I suspect it rhymes with “in roll yo.”

Speaking of which, last week I was talking to a guy who had a really cool alternate pronunciation of “ruined.” Instead of saying it “rue-ind,” which is how I usually hear it, he said it like “roont,” just one syllable with a “t” on the end. Maybe that’s a regional variation or something. I don’t recall ever hearing it.

That doesn’t mean anything, but you might find it of interest.
