Here’s the news release:
The Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming of the University of Nevada, Reno is sponsoring the 13th International Conference on Gambling and Risk-Taking. The conference will take place a little over a year from now, May 22-26, 2006, at Harrahs Lake Tahoe, at the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, Stateline, Nevada. As an important contributor to the literature and knowledge base related to gambling, I would like to personally encourage you to submit a significant contribution to the 13th International Conference. It is our expectation that this conference will draw the best researchers and some of the best research from a wide variety of disciplines. You should be part of that group.
The International Conferences on Gambling and Risk-Taking are the premier academic and professional conferences dealing with gambling. Their function since 1974 has been to expand the base of scientific knowledge about gambling in all its different facets. These conferences are only offered once every three years and, as a result, they generate a very high quality of work from prominent scholars and researchers from throughout the world. The intent of the 13th Conference is to bring together the worlds best gambling researchers to present their recent findings, and to facilitate discussion and debate about the implications of gambling and commercial gaming as it is evolving in many societies and political jurisdictions.
Gaming industries continue to be legalized, expanded and legitimized in almost all corners of the world, and commercial gaming has become an increasing presence in our communities, among our entertainment options, and through our public policy discourse. During the past decade, many of us have seen commercial gaming industries evolve, reach maturity, and sometimes struggle to reinvent themselves in response to competitive pressures and changing consumer preferences. We have also seen public policy-makers attempt to deal with the difficult issues surrounding gambling and tax policy, gambling and its unintended social consequences such as those linked to problem gambling, and brave new worlds posed by expanding technological possibilities.
These International Conferences began in 1974, and have been recognized as the first to bring together experts representing a diverse array of backgrounds and disciplines, in order to examine and analyze gambling from many perspectives. Leaders and representatives from commercial gaming industries, academia, research organizations, regulatory agencies, and the helping servicesas well as gamblers and the general publichave gathered roughly every three years since 1974 to present and evaluate research, discuss new trends and technologies, and explore the changes and challenges created by the increased presence of commercial gaming to citizens throughout the world. You should be part of this process in 2006.
